Cesi was defined the "balcony of the conca ternanana".
The town overlooks the plain of Terni and the amphitheatre of mountains that surround the city.
The medieval village, immersed in a sea of olive trees, is a natural view: views of great suggestion are visible from various points of the village, almost terraces overlooking the plain of Terni.
The view is even aerial for those who go up to Sant'Erasmo. From the plateau the panorama widens to the distant reliefs embracing, as a whole, that territory that some travelers of the Grand Tour have defined, for its beauty, the "valle di Tempe"
The appearance of the town
It rises on the ridge of Mount Torre Maggiore, Appendix of the Martani Mountains, 437 meters above sea level.
It distributes its half-coasted town with parallel roads intersected by narrow streets, staircases, squares, arches and subways. The medieval aspect prevails, often of strong visual impact, with remains of the ancient Rocca, of walls, circular towers and ancient doors.
The Name
The hypotheses on the origin of the name are basically two: the first, the most accredited, derives the name from "casum" (from the Latin "fall" ie cut) in reference to the custom of the cut of the wood still present among the population.
The second is derived from "caesum" (lat. "caedere") with the meaning of killing, slaughtering: in this case we refer to testimony of Livio that narrates a massacre of Umbria in the caves of the district of Terni, probably in Cesi.
Curious the hypothesis of Professor Farinacci who supports the Celtic presence in the area: for the scholar the name would derive from "cesius* (meaning): "inhabitant with clear eyes") and would bind to the local saying that so sounds "The Chechens have the eyes of cattu".
